The World No. 1 announced Friday that he has withdrawn from the season’s final Grand Slam as he continues to recover from a persistent right knee injury.
Sinner had already missed both the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open while attempting to recover in time for New York. After returning to the court in Monte Carlo in recent days, he and his team determined that he needs more time before competing again.
The Italian last competed at Wimbledon, where he won the title, and his absence removes one of the tournament’s biggest contenders from the US Open draw.
