The Indianapolis Colts are entering a crucial offseason as they prepare for training camp, and one of the team’s most respected leaders has plenty of confidence in quarterback Daniel Jones.
Veteran guard Quenton Nelson, who is entering his ninth NFL season, recently shared his thoughts on Jones and the progress the Colts have made throughout the offseason program. Nelson’s praise centered on the quarterback’s determination as he continues recovering from a torn Achilles injury.
“He’s been awesome to play with,” Nelson said when discussing Jones.
Few players carry more credibility inside the Colts locker room than Nelson. Since being selected by Indianapolis in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the standout offensive lineman has established himself as one of the league’s elite guards. Nelson has earned a Pro Bowl selection in every season of his career while also collecting three First-Team All-Pro honors and three Second-Team All-Pro selections.
Having played alongside multiple quarterbacks during his time in Indianapolis, Nelson believes Jones brings a unique level of commitment and competitiveness to the team.
“His determination and his work ethic,” Nelson said. “It all comes from him giving me confidence that he’s going to be even better than he was last year. He’s just a dog, and I love playing with him. Love working with him because he works so hard.”
Jones was limited during Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and mandatory minicamp as he continued his recovery, but the Colts remain optimistic about his readiness for the upcoming season.
Beyond Jones’ development, Nelson believes the entire roster benefited from a productive offseason program.
“It was great,” Nelson said. “I just feel like all the guys attacked it. We had a great program in place. The guys got better. Guys improved and are looking forward to camp, having a tough camp and bringing that to the season and starting fast.”
One area expected to be a strength for Indianapolis in 2026 is the offensive line. The Colts return four of their five starters from last season, providing valuable continuity in front of whoever ultimately takes the first snap under center this fall.
Nelson also highlighted the growth of second-year lineman Matt Goncalves, who spent time learning the guard position during his rookie season.
“Matt Goncalves really made big strides this year,” Nelson said. “It was his first time playing guard last year, and he looks more comfortable.”
According to Nelson, Goncalves dedicated himself to improving during the offseason by adding strength and refining his technique, developments that could help solidify the Colts’ offensive front heading into the season.
With minicamp now complete, the Colts enter a brief break before training camp begins later this summer. While the team’s official training camp schedule has not yet been announced, the early reviews from one of Indianapolis’ most respected veterans suggest there is growing optimism inside the locker room.
If Nelson’s assessment is any indication, the Colts believe Daniel Jones’ leadership, determination, and relentless work ethic could play a major role in shaping the team’s success in 2026.
