INDIANAPOLIS — INDYCAR has officially introduced the IR-28, the all-new race car that will usher in a new era for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES beginning with the 2028 season. It marks the championship’s first completely new chassis since 2012.
Developed by Dallara in collaboration with INDYCAR, Chevrolet and Honda, the IR-28 has been redesigned from the ground up to be lighter, faster and safer. The new car is expected to improve overtaking opportunities while delivering higher top speeds and a more exciting on-track product for fans.
Among the biggest changes are a weight reduction of approximately 100 pounds (45 kg), revised aerodynamics that generate less turbulent air, an upgraded hybrid powertrain producing up to 760 horsepower, improved cockpit ergonomics and enhanced driver safety systems. The car will also feature digital position displays and several innovations designed to improve the fan experience.
Testing of the IR-28 is set to begin immediately, giving teams and manufacturers nearly two years to prepare before the car makes its competitive debut at the start of the 2028 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season.
