MASON, Ohio — Arthur Fils has a new place in Cincinnati Open history.

The 22-year-old Frenchman defeated American Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 on Sunday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center to win the 2026 Cincinnati Open men’s singles title and capture the first ATP Masters 1000 trophy of his career.

The victory is the biggest of Fils’ career and makes him the youngest French Masters 1000 champion in the history of the series. He is also the first French player to win a Masters 1000 title since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Toronto in 2014.

A final defined by momentum

Fils took control early in the championship match, using his powerful baseline game and aggressive serving to win the opening set 6-3.

Tiafoe responded in the second, finding his rhythm and taking the set 6-1 to force a decider. But the momentum shifted dramatically one final time.

Fils completely dominated the third set, breaking Tiafoe repeatedly and closing out the championship with a 6-0 final set. The match lasted one hour and 28 minutes.

The Frenchman finished the final with 11 aces, just one double fault and four breaks of serve from eight opportunities.

The road to the title

Seeded No. 21 in Cincinnati, Fils put together an impressive run through the tournament.

After surviving a three-set battle against Jiri Lehecka, he defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets before overpowering Thiago Agustín Tirante 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

That victory sent Fils to his third Masters 1000 semifinal of the 2026 season, where he continued his run with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Flavio Cobolli to reach his first Masters 1000 final.

His complete path to the title:

  • R64: def. Yannick Hanfmann, 7-6(5), 6-1
  • R32: def. Jiri Lehecka, 6-1, 6-7(7), 6-3
  • R16: def. Alex de Minaur, 6-3, 6-4
  • Quarterfinal: def. Thiago Agustín Tirante, 6-3, 6-2
  • Semifinal: def. Flavio Cobolli, 6-3, 6-4
  • Final: def. Frances Tiafoe, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0

From injury to Cincinnati champion

The Cincinnati title carries even more significance considering Fils’ recent journey.

The Frenchman missed nearly eight months of competition due to a lower-back injury and entered 2026 still working his way back to full form. His season has since included deep Masters 1000 runs in Miami and Madrid, as well as a title at the Barcelona Open.

Now, Cincinnati represents the breakthrough moment.

“This feels good,” Fils said after the victory, reflecting on the training, sacrifice and injury struggles that led to his first Masters 1000 championship.

After securing the final point, Fils wrote “WHO’S GONNA TALK NOW?” on the courtside camera, responding to the criticism and doubts he faced during his extended absence from the sport.

The victory will move Fils to a new career-high ranking of World No. 11, while further strengthening his position in the race toward the ATP Finals.

For Fils, Cincinnati was more than just another tournament victory.

It was the moment one of tennis’ most promising young players turned a comeback into the biggest championship of his career.
