Lando Norris delivered one of his strongest performances of the season Sunday, capturing his first Formula 1 victory of 2026 by winning a dramatic Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring.
Starting from pole position, Norris briefly lost the lead on the opening lap to McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri before strategy and changing race circumstances swung the momentum back in his favor. Norris reclaimed the lead after the pit cycle and controlled the closing stages to earn McLaren’s first Grand Prix victory of the season.
Max Verstappen finished second after another strong recovery drive for Red Bull, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli completed the podium for Mercedes despite starting seventh following a grid penalty. The result allowed Antonelli to extend his lead in the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship heading into the summer break.
The race featured several twists, including the retirement of Piastri after a gearbox failure with just 14 laps remaining. The Australian had looked capable of giving McLaren a one-two finish before mechanical issues ended his afternoon. A Virtual Safety Car that followed reshaped pit strategy across the field and helped define the final order.
Charles Leclerc inherited fourth place after Lewis Hamilton received a post-race five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, dropping the Ferrari driver to fifth. George Russell recovered to finish seventh after a difficult opening lap, while Isack Hadjar, Liam Lawson, Nico Hülkenberg and Arvid Lindblad rounded out the top ten.
Norris’ victory ends a long wait for both the British driver and McLaren, providing a major boost before Formula 1 heads into its mid-season break. The championship will resume later next month with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
